Re: [Chrysler300] Steering wheel centering

I just found out the hard way that the Steering Box is indexed, but the Pittman Arm has 4 index slots in it. Now this is on 93 Dakota, but I would look at that first.
Had not seen that before, and it just went together fine. Just 90 ° off.
Would not turn very far to the left but would cut in to the frame to the right.

The proper way to adjust your center is ,  Get both wheels off of the ground. Then you turn your steering wheel from the Left  then back to the right.  Then to find top center you should feel a little tightness of the steering right at center. That is called your High Point.  That is where you have your steering box centered.   Every thing else is set to that point.  If you don’t feel that High point ,  Loosen up your steering box adjustment screw and adjust that.  Barely turn the adjustment in and turn your steering wheel back and forth a small amount until you feel that high point.  Then lock the adjustment screw lock down.

Now all your other adjustments are set from there.     Gary Barker

I doubt 90 degrees is tie rod..but anything is possible..that is a lot off. sounds like some part of column or attachment of pitman arm was assembled incorrectly? What was done, and why?

My recollection is that the wheel, steering box, shaft and idler are all indexed. I assume it was centered prior to disassembly and new parts installed? The only adjustment should be at the tie rods. Are they evenly adjusted? My suspicion is they aren't….

What to tell the dealer? If it is the tie rod adjusters that aren't centred, I would ask for my money back and head to someone who understands basics mechanics.

Had new parts installed on 1966 300 and dealer can not center steering wheel.  It is off 90 degrees!!!  Isn't this a simple fix?  You can not just recenter the wheel as it is indexed.  What do I tell the dealer?
