Couple of key points have been made re 300s today, and what is happening values wise.
1. Many long time car owners have/got their cars because we just wanted them, NOT BECAUSE THEY WERE TO BE AN INVESTMENT. And if Investors have since taken over, that often makes it harder for those who want to use and enjoy their cars. ( And that is me, I got them to enjoy them. My 2nd 300C that owes me heaps, was never going to be an investment, I just liked it, wanted to see it back to how it should be.) 2. Irregardless of above, restoring a 300 nowadays is expensive - restoring even way more basic cars is not cheap. And going gone are the days/chances where one buys a car that just needs quick paint touch ups or just one or two real fast simple things to make near as good as new again. So the days of a $5,000-$10,000 near mint original pre '61 300 no longer exist. And my guess is to do say a 300F/G - if buying a car, and paying to get it back to new, might run up near $60,000 - $90,000 (not actual $$s spending, but if one allows so much an hours for hours involved atop the actual ##s spent on chrome/paint/tires etc etc. I think this is how good Insurance Cos work out what a restored car worth - not what paid for it years ago, but what it would cost for them to give you a similar one on your drive, with you having to do none of repair/replacement work.) 3. I started my original post by saying I far from the US and also that if 300 US owners continued to let cars go at auctions without reserves that take into consideration the costs today of doing a 300, then values might be pushed down further. And from reading a few posts since, if currently the last few months there are not enough buyers out there that are aware of what the first letter 300s were versus other cars that are now bringing good/better prices, then prices are not going up soon?! So at the end of all this, it comes down to if a 300 seller must sell, all of the above matters not one hill of beans - he will/must take what the market/buyer offers. And that may be only half to third of what the car worth (resto/replacement cost wise) if there only 1 buyer there. All that means then, is somebody gets a bargain - hopefully it is some true 300 lover. Because trust me, if cars that were not that as great driver cars as many nowadays might say otherwise - such as Gullwing mid 50s Mercedes - are regularly seeing buyers pay around a million a car, those finned true 300s are not just worth a twentyith of that in reality - but then today it is often a crazy world we live in/see ?! Irregardless - if you bought your 300 to enjoy, get out there and drive it - because one thing is 100% indisputable - we cannot take them with us when we go Christopher in Australia To: mmoore8425@xxxxxxx CC: ronbo97@xxxxxxxxxxx; chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx From: Chrysler300-noreply@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Sat, 23 Aug 2014 13:58:46 -0500 Subject: Re: [Chrysler300] Bill Korbel's 300G at Russo Steele Guys, there is another elephant in the room here. I have observed over too many decades how the "Collecting" bug works.
When I was a young Hot Rodder, There were many "Old Folks" who had Model T's and A's.
the Generation behind them collected the 30's and 40's cars. As time when on, the T and A's were being sold as the owners aged out of the hobby and the prices kept coming down. The 30's and 40's were being made into street rods at an increasingly rate.
My 1st car was a 1933 Chevy Coupe. Next was a 1949 Ford Coupe, then Mercury Convertibles. Later my pride and joy was a 1932 Ford 5 window coupe, chopped, channeled, "Z"ed and sectioned. Weighed 1850 # and had a 850 # 331 Hemi in it and was serious Bad Ass. Tastes change over the years, I came to the 300's @ 36 years old and have only had Chrysler products in my small stable since.
Point being. like the songs says "Ya gotta know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em"
The only way these treasures of ours will bring any real big money is if there are still people who really love them and have gotten to the stage of life to be able to afford them. that group is getting smaller and smaller, so the value goes down. So, while we hate to let our "babies" go, for many, now's the time to move them to a new owner, while there are still some who want them. Mena is having it's annual Rod Run this week end and there are more and more "Rat Rods" in attendance, More and more are liking them, since you can do what you want with what you have on hand and quickly drive an eye-catahcr.
