It was that compromise, performance car but a family car also which was the motivation I thought was behind it. That need was answered for most people when Chevrolet in 1955 had provided a "big" v8 in their cheapest car, the 150, or so I read from my hero of the day, Uncle Tom McCahill of MI. It was a 4 door model, white with red bench seats. I talked to the original owner of the car and he told me that his wife wanted a practical car and he wanted a performance car, so they ordered this beast. I have several photos of it. So I suppose that if you had the cash you could probably coble together just about any Chrysler product you wanted. In 1961 and '62, he was one of the top Chrysler and Imperial sales people in the world. I remember him telling of a couple who came to him and special ordered a 4dr 300 Sport with H engine when he was with Wood Motors, I assume this included more than just the 2 x 4 engine, but am not sure. This pre-dates me by a few years so I never saw or have seen such a brute. > Dad, if you read this, hit the "Reply All" button and let people know what you remember. > Best regards, > Richard Osborne > On Jan 30, 2014, at 8:08 AM, Jerry Lindsay wrote: > > I don’t see why the 300 4 door 300 couldn’t be ordered with the “H” package. It wouldn’t be my first choice, that said, what turns you on. At one time I knew what the “H” package costs, but don’t remember where I placed that information. It’s tough getting’s old. Took the 3 speed out for a run. Runs great, but man that steering is all over the place. I haven’t gotten under the car to check what rear it has. You could built a 300 sport into a “H” through your local Chrysler dealer. The “H” wheels, wheel covers, radiators, etc. were available to anyone. I brought a 300 sport that came from the factory with a 413 engine and a Manuel 3-speed transmission. He had the dealer install Chrysler (Mopar) Cool Aire Mode “G” A/C unit ( #2299317 Basic package at $ 170.05 + Package #2299850 @ $79.95 + $6.25 tax for a total of $ 256.25 . Wow. that used the exact same part numbers as my “H”. He brought the (4) “H” rims (#2200928) at $ 20.00 each for a total price of $80.00 + $2.00 tax), (4) 15” “H” wheel covers (#2265535 @ $ 22.50 each for total price of $90.00+ $ 1.80 tax= $91.80. Not sure why there was a difference in tax monies. ?? Car was built 3/7/62 took possession 3/9/62 ( This is just a Jerry opinion, but I think he ordered the car this way and later converted it to an “H” appearing 300 Sport. As the A/C unit, 15” rims and “H” wheel cover were done over a period from 6/22/62 through10/1/62. > > As production for the 62 model year began in August ( I have a Black 62 Sport Convertible built on 8/31/61) any part number was available to upgrade any car including the Newport, where I believe the “H” package was available also. 1962 was a different year for the 300’s, many styling changes as well as performance availabilities. Whatever you could dream up you could do. In fact I believe that the 62 300 Sport Coupe that Ray Brown built and drove for Hot Rod magazine had the rams put on it. What ever happened to that car? > > Doug, isn’t your 300 convertible a “H” package one? > > My 2 cents worth. > > Jerry Lindsay > > From: Chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [ mailto:Chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of kmaniak@xxxxxxx > Sent: Wednesday, January 29, 2014 12:02 AM > To: mmoore8425@xxxxxxx; russ300@xxxxxxxxx > Cc: Chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx > Subject: Re: [Chrysler300] Possible 300H in Craigslist ad? > > Reading about this so called H-option on a standard 300 got me to thinking. > > It is entirely possible that Chrysler depleated their inventory of 4-bucket seat interiors, a hold over from 1960 & 1961 before they used up the twin four barrel engines and 150 mph speedometers. The H option package on the sport 300 could have been a mid-year production change. It would be interesting to note the production dates of the H option package 300's. Or it could have been a spring sales package for the sport 300, much like the "Silver 300" trim package in 1964. I do remember seeing a '62 sport 300 with H engine and 150 mph speedometer at the 'Inc. meet in Santa Cruz in 1981. I don't recall if it had an H emblem on the back, but it was a sport interior. It was a white car but I don't remember who owned it. > > Another project in data collection for the curious mind. > > Chris the K MANIAC > > -----Original Message----- > From: Michael Moore mmoore8425@xxxxxxx> > To: Russell Vaughan russ300@xxxxxxxxx> > Cc: 300 Chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> > Sent: Tue, Jan 28, 2014 3:17 pm > Subject: Re: [Chrysler300] Possible 300H in Craigslist ad? > > My friend Ian apparently had one of those, although he thought it exited because of the impracticality (gasp!) of the 4 bucket seats if you needed more room but wanted performance. I think I've run across 3 in my time. To the best of my knowledge, it was never publicized back when they were new. My guess is the sales were so poor in '62 they created it to salvage some sales for people who wanted the performance without the price. > > Russ Vaughan > > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] > > > ------------------------------------ To send a message to this group, send an email to: Chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to bob@xxxxxxxxxxxxx or go to http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Chrysler300/join and select the "Leave Group" button For list server instructions, go to http://www.chrysler300club.com/yahoolist/inst.htm For archives go to http://www.forwardlook.net/300-archive/search.htm#querylangYahoo Groups Links <*> To visit your group on the web, go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Chrysler300/ <*> Your email settings: Individual Email | Traditional <*> To change settings online go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Chrysler300/join (Yahoo!
