I would not consider replacing the gasket unless your rubber is severely deteriorated from sun damage, and I doubt that is the problem. If the leak comes from the area between the glass and the rubber, separate the two with a non damaging tool like a wood stick or plastic trim tool and make sure it is clean in there, blow it out with compressed air if need be. Then, inject a small bead of clear silicone RTV between the glass and rubber all along the bottom. Let the gasket spring back and then wipe off the excess. Once it's cured the problem should go away. If the leak is between the frame and the rubber, its more involved to seal up because it's hard to get in there and you will need to remove the trim moldings to get access.

This is the process I used with my 300G many years ago and I have not had any leaks. I like clear silicone because it is easy to wipe off before its cured, seals well, is easy to find, and lasts 50 years (so they say). Others may prefer urethane, but that stuff is messy for small jobs like this in my opinion. Now, if you have an actual gap there, it may be better to use black urethane or black RTV to bridge the gap, seal, and have it blend better with the gasket. Pulling the windshield to replace the gasket should be a method of last resort and avoided at all costs as far as I'm concerned. You risk breaking the glass, and the fit of the new seal is in question. The original gaskets have held up remarkably well in these cars, and should always be reused (or kept in service) whenever possible.

Working on my '62 New Yorker Wagon, though I would think the question applies to all'60-'64 models. (Newports, New Yorkers, 300's):

I have discovered if I pour water on the windshield... it enters at the base of the windshield... ending up inside the base of the inner kick panel wells. And then sits there promoting a fun thing called RUST!!

Does a Gary Goers replacement windshield gasket fix the lack of sealing in anyone's experience? Or are these years prone to leakage regardless and a slathering of clear silicone is required?
