Re: [Chrysler300] I don't need alcohol to be happy

To clarify or confuse the issue as it relates to Canada - As of Sept 1, 2010, the feds mandated an "annual pool average" 5% ethanol content by each gasoline producer. This means that one gasoline grade can be 0% and another grade 10%, as long as the corporate average over the course of the year is 5%. Ethanol content can vary by season as well (more in winter as gas line antifreeze).

Shell's V Power 91 octane contains no ethanol anywhere in Canada, per their website:
http://www.shell.ca/en/products-services/on-the-road/fuels/shell-vpower.html . That means Shell's other grades have more than 5% to comply with the federal requirement.

Methanol levels are supposed to be posted on the pumps (I haven't gone station to station to check that.)

In BC, Chevron 94 octane is supposed to have no ethanol. In Alberta and the Atlantic provinces, most companies except Petro-Canada / Sunoco (Suncor owned companies in Canada), don't add ethanol to their 91 octane grade. Same in Ontario, except Esso has ethanol in their 91. Esso adds ethanol to all grades in BC, Saskatchewan and Manitoba as well. Manitoba and Saskatchewan have their own regulations requiring higher ethanol levels than the feds in all grades (8.5% and 7.5%).

In Alberta, Co-op claims to have no ethanol in any of their grades. That's questionable, given Co-op gas in refined in their own refinery in Regina, Saskatchewan, a province that requires ethanol in every grade. My big block cars ping on Co-op premium 91, so I don't use it.

So depending on where you live, it's possible to purchase 91 octane ethanol free gas.

(Here's one catch however - given the propensity for gasoline retailers to exchange each other's product depending on supply, refinery maintenance shutdowns etc., there's still a possibility of getting ethanol laced fuel - for example if a group of Shell stations temporarily buy fuels from a Suncor/Petro-Canada refinery???............)

Two cents on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon............

John, I'm not sure where you're getting your information from? Since 2010 all automotive gasoline in Canada is required to have a minimum of 5% ethanol. Most stations across the country are closer to 10% on average from what I've read.
