Thought you all may like to see my note to Larry. Did not realize it was not on the list.

Larry,
Reading your note at, "cable gets gets really hot all the way to the battery..."! Forget the exhaust! I have been there, the cable is getting really hot for one of two reasons. The gauge size on the cable is to thin or, more likely, # two the starter is drawing too much amperage. The Solution and the way to fine out is to use a test meter to register amperage draw. If you do not have one, drive to a shop which does have a meter and ask them place the meter on the starter wire when you try to start it (it has clamps which clasp around the wire and read the currant draw, in amperage). Refer to a service manual for the proper amount of currant draw for your model.

When you determine that this is the case (that the draw that starter is making is too high) you will also find out the starter has shorted windings and needs to be rebuilt.
If you would like to know why this happens to the starter, let me know and that will be something else to discuss. [hint: low batt, heat exhaust]

Do not let them talk you into replacing the generator or voltage regulator or good wires until you determine this. I say this from experience operating a fleet of delivery vehicles which after a run (when the battery should be charged) would not start again which (kind of) resembles a bad battery. This condition can also, if not repaired, cause high strain on the batt and alt/gen/regulator and cause them to actually go bad also.
I only know this after finding out the the vehicles had the battery and the alternator and or the regulator changed one every month and the battery some times twice within three months. Until I said and decided it must be something else lets check and they found out the excess draw from the starter was the fault. They, the shop, were very please for all the extra work and weather they knew this while they were doing the replacement of the electrical components or not, I will never know.

Check it out it could save you a lot of money and worry.

John Jung
PS: I just noticed the subject "negative Battery Cable". Is it just the ground or is it the starter cable, also or both getting hot?

Could someone please tell me where on the engine should the negative battery cable be attached for a 300D

When I bought my car it was attached to the exhaust manifold stud closest to the battery

I just noticed that the cable gets really hot all the way to the battery from the heat of the exhaust manifold

Sometimes when the engine is hot it will not crank even though the battery is fully charged could this be due to the hot negative battery cable?

Thank You

Larry Jabin
