Hello Group - I am in the midst of restoring my late father's 1957 Chrysler 300C, and am now working on the brakes. The drums have been resurfaced, the shoes have been sent to Porterfield to be re-lined with a modern high-friction fade-resistant compound, and the rubber hoses are being replicated in a modern small-diameter stainless braided configuration (covered in black rubber to simulate original appearance). However, I find that the brake shoe retainers (and their associated curlicue attaching clips) are entirely missing on both rear brake assemblies. This allowed the shoes to "wander" a bit, allowing the retraction springs to become disconnected - the brakes then randomly grabbed or dragged and wore unevenly, so I definitely need to replace them. The retainers are made of 0.028" spring steel in a roughly parallelogram shape measuring 2.675" long by 1.25" wide. They are attached to the backing plate by the curlicue wire clip and provide tension on the shoes to keep them from "walking" outward on the pivot points while still allowing radial motion upon actuation by the wheel cylinders. The local Chrysler dealer was of absolutely no help, as expected, and vintage specialists like Andy Bernbaum don't carry tiny hardware pieces like that. My service manual illustrates the part applicable on 1957 - 59 Mopars, so that should expand the range of potential donor vehicles. I very much need four each of the retainers and wire clips, and would certainly appreciate any help you members could provide. If you have access to a potential donor brake assembly, please contact me and I will send you a scan of the parts I need - this list server will not accept non-text attachments. Thanks for the help!
