RE: [Chrysler300] Using Dexron 5 in an Aluminum Torqueflight

I am far away (obviously) but before much more space is spent on this 'correct F type' versus 'who knows what Dexrons/others', isn't it pretty obvious that Chrysler and Ford transmission clutch plate packs in the auto transmission WILL SLIP MORE if WRONG TYPE TRANS FLUID IS USED, And slipping more, means they will fail well before they should !!??

Sure you can use Dexron - any type of trans fluid you wish - but the reality is, use a wrong type, and your clutch packs/plates will fail/wear sooner than they were designed to. Sort of like putting sand in your engine oil - sure it will run, do some miles, but it sure likely won't last as long as it should/could??!

READ THE REST AT YOUR PERIL - it relates 100% to our 300s, but it takes a while to get there!! So only read if you wish.

Now, re being blinded/convinced by supposed 'experts' - as for 'car experts' - there are two types (at least)
(i) those who (think they) 'know' (better) because they have newer better training/technologies - 'whatever?!'
- and then there are those
(ii) who 'really know' because they have done and seen it all, won/seen results proven/proving.

I will not bore all/any with untold (expert) examples but here are two quick ones;
1) the 'restoration correctness guru/expert' - he is the type who says something is wrong because it does not (seem to him?!) make sense - and to relate this to 300ly - for a while it was claimed '57 300C radiator cores were of only one type, and that cars/300Cs that did not have this type were wrong, non factory. And the truth only later came out when others with supposed wrong other type (type of fin) cores with factory correct date stamped top tanks, sort of asked how did this be/happen, and along comes a guy/member who says 'both are correct, was there back then, and it just depended on what was supplied, and both types were actually used/factory' !!
So sometimes try to keep open minds when being pressured/told by 'experts' ?!

2) the old chestnut 'because it is not something just designed/built 'yesterday', with latest technology, it is rubbish/secondrate/useless verus newer/later'.
example that blows this out of the water?! - For 27 years I owned the 10th last AC/Shelby Cobra (sportscar - 175 mph, "Car & Driver" mag wrote in 1967 something like 'there are fast cars, then there are ..., and 'supercars beware'.
And already by late 70s, into the 80s, 'everyone' had now/already built a better handling one, "because they had/used latest technology", etc., etc..
So I drove a few of these 'kits/replicars/recreations' - whatever - and none drove as good as my car. Now my car was not your usual heavy 427 engine Cobra, but the one Shelby's gun designer/racer wanted - original 1st two series '62-64 Cobra 289 hipo motor fitted in the then new stronger Series III 427 coil over chassis - and the Cobra guys who know tell you, that my one of only 27 such cars, is/was the best. A 75 mph 1st gear, over 100mph in 2nd, maybe sub 11sec quarter mile after I uprated motor to 385bhp, yet you could drive it with just near fingertips on steering wheel, etc, etc !! Anyhow finally I came to sell the car - it was just way faster than laws now allowed - so it now become just like sleeping each night next to naked Miss World/Universe, and yet you could not touch her - damn that car was fast, and so safe, the faster you went, the slower it seemed - it just squashed down firmer/harder on the road the faster you went.
Anyhow anyhow!! - I sold the car to great guy, cheap sort of for what it was/is, but what is important re what I saying/telling here - he had sold his business to I think SONY, and had some money, like 7 figure sums by multiples enough to buy any, near every, modern good fast car short of Bugatti Veyrons. And he already owned old cars from late 20s best Bentleys thru to such as alloy bodied 275 GTB 60s Ferrari, many Lambos, etc. And bringing all this back back to the story - 300 trans oil 'expets' - when I sold him the car, I said, "I do not think you will ever buy a faster safer car"?!
And when I saw a year later, first thing he said was " No, I am not ever selling you back the car, I am never selling it!" And now a few more years later, it is still the same - not the perfect car (steering kicks badly over real bad potholes/rough, your head gets blown/ripped off over 110mph, etc) - but it is, he says ' the last car I will ever sell of my cars '.
And this guy is a great guy, because he owns his cars to drive them, not to be a poser/showoff!!

So here we are, now near 50 years since Carrol Shelby got Ken Miles to help him design a better Cobra to replace the fiirst one that was virtually the old AC Ace with just a Ford V8 dropped in that had 'wipped Ferrari asse', won World Championship.
And what the 'because we have new/latest technology' experts/people had overlooked, was Shelby/Miles had had all the FORD MOTOR CO behind them for their 1st true Shelby (non AC Ace) Cobra - and most important, Ford gave Shelby all they had just learned from designing the near 200 mph FORD GT40 - their suspension/computer guru Klass Arning (or some name like that, I think I have early onset of 'Alan Heimer's' desease).
So the odds of some (new latest taught degree) guy in a tin shed spending say 2 weeks modifying say often a basic (60s) Jag suspension, putting it in some homemade design frame, and they telling the World he has designed a better clothes peg/Cobra, are maybe not so great/brilliant ?!
And even today, now near after 50 years, no one has with all the newer/later technolgy, yet designed a car that so clearly in one standout world known/accepted 'new supercar' that in that 'one so well known by everyone today car' combines all the brilliance, driving safety and joy, sheer speed, etc, that Shelby/Miles/Arning put into those 27 small block Cobras that used the wide body chassis/suspension that usually has 427 motor that makes it somewhat of a pig/handfull ?!
So so much for nothing can be good/best unless it done using latest new technologoy !?

History is dotted with lucky/brilliant combinations/outcomes - so just because someone tells you something is (OBVIOUSLY!!!?) better because it is 'latest/new', do not think Chrysler in late 50s and early 60s 300s were morons, re not knowing what was correct trans fluid to use - and I say/repeat, sometimes beware those who say, try to say, Chrysler/others could learn a lot from today's latest?!

End of stoies/topic

Hi All,

Thanks for all the advice on the trans fluid. Like with many topics, we have limited data on how the new ATF fluids will actually perform in our old torqueflights. We also do not drive these beautiful Chrysler 300s as our everyday driver, so any detrimental effects may be stretched over 5-10-15 years.

The best advice is to get the trans rebuilt by someone that knows them inside and out.
The devil is in the details!

Regards,
Mark

Hi Paul,

Why don't you get the warm and fuzzies from that answer. The operative word was detergents! The trannies in these beasts leak enough without any help from modern detergents to open up more leaks. A well functioning tranny with a well meaning owner would spend a small amount of money to change the fluid and that buys him/her a tranny rebuild.

But it will be clean!

Friction for crisp shifts should be the operative word.

BTW, F replaced A and FA replaced F.

The F stands for Ford and the A stands for A thus FA a dual use tranny fluid.
