RE: [Chrysler300] oil leaking 392

Marshall is correct. I forgot to add, the knurl for the rope seal must be
ground smooth for the lip seal to work. Needless to say the motor needs to
be disassembled.

Thank you,

There's no way you could ever see any part of the rear main crankshaft seal
with the oil pan in place on the engine. I think the "rope-like" gasket
that Larry refers to must be the seal between the pan and the main bearing
cap. All of those that I've seen are of neoprene, but maybe can look
rope-like when dirty and wet with oil. You can have a leak there, Larry,
but if you do I suspect a slight defect in the oil pan surface not properly
prepared during the overhaul. You should be able to repair that quite
easily with the pan off.

Opinions differ about what kind of seal to use in the rear mains. Most of
the older engines were originally equipped with a rope type seal and they
work very well and last a long time if properly installed. Unfortunately a
proper installation is a bit tricky and I think that's the main reason the
rubber-lip seal is often preferred. When a rope seal was used the
crankshaft was usually knurled with helical grooves on the sealing surface
and those grooves tended to accumulate surplus oil and sort of pump it back
toward the sump in normal crankshaft rotation. If you put a rubber-lip seal
on that grooved surface you will almost certainly create a leak. That
rubber lip-seal needs a very smooth, almost polished finish to work
effectively.
