RE: [Chrysler300] noisy rear brakes 1958 300D

Oops-the D still had the parking/emergency brake on the rear of the
transmission. Later cars with parking/emergency brakes in the rear drums
can get warped drums from setting the manual brakes hard into hot drums.
They still work and massage your right foot at the same time.

This is why arc grinding the shoes to the actual ID of the drum they will be
installed in is so helpful. It makes initial contact of shoe to drum more
uniform. If necessary, have the drum turned first, if only to eliminate the
deepest groves and assure roundness/concentricity which might be caused by
setting the parking brake hard on hot drums. Some say the drums on each
side should be of the precise same ID for ultimate balance but I'm not
convinced.

Hi Larry,
The shoes are self centering on the bottom support. There is only the upper
adjustment. The lower piece actually goes all the way up to the adjuster. It
should be free to move with the return spring removed.

If anybody has any secrets or knowledge about these brakes I would love to
know about it
The design is baffling to me
My main concern is with the rear brakes where the bottom of the brake shoe
contacts the support plate anchors

Is there any kind of adjustment for that?

Thanks
