RE: [Chrysler300] 1960 Trans - A466

I'm no tranny guru, but I recently had an opportunity to inspect the broken
reverse band on my '55 PowerFlite. It was a clean break of a steel circular
band with ears for actuation by a solenoid. Other PowerFlite owners
indicated this was not an uncommon problem. The replacement had improved
design and strength in the ear section. My mechanic says he should be able
to replace the band without removing the tranny. Apparently the car could
be driven forward safely and I must have done so while driving to my
mechanic's shop unknowingly with no reverse. After all, it is a Forward
Look car, not a Backward Look machine. Good luck.

Thinking back, sometimes when shifting to reverse, I had to gun the motor a
little to get it to engage. This may have resulted in a harder shift when
it did grab. Recommendation: Be gentle when going into reverse.

Hello Transmission Guru's,
I need your advice on the A466 (1960) as it should behave in Reverse. I
tried to back out of the garage but the car wouldn't move. Gave it about 10
or 20% throttle and the suspension torqued a little bit as you would get
doing a brake torque, but the car still wouldn't move. Since the rear wheels
spin freely in Neutral, I suspected the parking brake.

Next I lifted the rear wheels off the ground and with the trans in Drive,
the wheels turned in the forward direction. Brought the wheels to a stop and
put the trans in Reverse and the wheels still turned in the Forward
direction!

Can anyone offer any suggestions besides a total rebuild? Even if I have to
do a rebuild, is it safe to drive as normal (except for being careful not to
park where I will need Reverse)?

Thanks,
Gary
