Did they reinstall the Alignment Dowels in the block? They often get overlooked but are necessary to align the transmission with the block. If not aligned you will experience starter problems like you are, or starter not engaging depending on what way it is misaligned. Another problem is converter bolts hard to start. What say you? I think this Eeeek! is still haunted. Starter stuck in ring gear last fall & partially disassembled to get it released, then off to storage. Located rebuilt starter & installed last week Old starter was "groaning" when 1st hit key, then speed up till motor caught. So thought windings were gone-20 yrs old. But started fine this spring. New starter also groans & then speeds up & it starts when cold. When hot, barely cranks over, doubtful if it will start sometimes. Motor has about 400 miles after full rebuild. One suggestion is timing needs to be backed off a bit, which I haven't tried yet. Any other ideas out there? Thanks. Lindsey in Winnipeg We got our NHL hockey team back this week. Go Jets Go!
