Re: [Chrysler300] Chrysler300] 1962 300 - Cooling Question

My gage used to do that, too (K), although it never really got that hot. Now it doesn't do anything. Probably the sending unit or the gage. It's something that really lends itself to procrastination, since the a/c compressor might have to be removed or the gage panel taken out.

I suspect that the thermostat is not opening smoothly and may be making
nly one move when it gets hot enough. It then has opened enough to
llow gradual cooling to near its usual reading. I also suspect it never
otally closes. I have seen this behavior in the past.

Here's a constant temporary issue I am having....

When car is cold, from sitting all night...
It starts up fine, I warm it up for 2 minutes and then start to
 drive.

About 5 minutes into the drive the temperature guage begins it s
 ascent to it's
normal spot; just about a quarter of the way up from the dead cold
 position.
Then the needle keeps going, all the way to the HOT position, where
 it sits for
a minute...and then it creeps back down to the quarter mark.

Here is what I have done to date:
 - Pulled the NEWER radiator and had it flushed
 - Flushed the block out twice
 - Water Pump is fairly new on the 45,000, new everything, motor
 - Newer Hoses are not collapsing
 - Heater core is clean and works
 - I have "burped" the radiator

All I can think of is that the Thermostat is taking too long to
 fully open and
 needs to be replaced??
 Who's with me?
(Just a pain in having to lift up that A/C Compressor to make that
 change.)
 Thanks!
