Re: [Chrysler300] 300F Tire questions - again!

I am sure wheels do fail. Wheel failures I have seen were mostly due to wheel fasteners either overtightened or left loose. Damage to wheels due to running into rocks or other solid things is also what I see. Aftermarket wheels can have serious hub mounting problems.

Radials retrofitted on old pre radials wheels will not work according to the vehicle manufacturers despite my experiences to the contrary. I would hope that club members have carefully inspected the wheels on their cars for damage and corrosion and proper mounting at the hub.

As a driver, I did experience my one and only to date sudden wheel failure at speed on a California freeway about 1962. That wheel/tire combination on our Ford pickup was grossly overloaded. The tire was at least one size too large for the wheel. Wheel split at the bead seat. Kind of a short duration wild ride. We were lucky. Did have a spare and tools and then a short drive on to home.

I think tire quality for an old car, and especially one that is to be highway driven, should be very important. Some reports by club members might suggest some brands, bias or radial construction, are not safe on heavy, powerful road warriors.
