Its water pump rebuild time. Somewhere I heard that there is a difference between the pumps for the 55 & 56. I have the original factory issue service manuals for both and the Mopar Passenger Car Parts List for 55-56. About 4 years ago I picked up a used pump that the seller stated had been rebuilt. I threw it in the back yard for "seasoning" a process that gathers more rust. All the rust has been removed down to cast iron. The only ID is a number on the casting; 1537947-1. This number does not show up in the parts list section 7-42-0 or 7-44-0. The only difference I can see in the exploded views is the use of a bearing snap ring for the 55 pump pictured. None appears in the 56 exploded view. The spare pump has a snap ring; does this mean I have a 55 pump? The 56 manual mentions a plastic impeller; the spare has a steel impeller, again does this mean the spare is a 55 pump? If these are the only differences, why aren't the pumps interchangable? The 56 manual mentions that the plastic impeller breaks in disassemble and cannot be re-used. Is there a source for the impeller?
