I recently bought a distributor cap at AutoZone and it had a 1 molded into the cap at the proper position for plug 1. The cap color was tan, making it not stock looking, but it was easier to get the plug wires on straight. #1 is just where the alternator bolt goes into the head on my '63. Make sure you have the correct rotation. The #1 position will be dependent upon where the rotor points (on the distributor) when the #1 cylinder is at top dead center. This is a challenge if someone has forgotten or changed the wires around. You will need to rotate the engine until you get the #1 at the top of it's compression stroke (put a finger over the spark plug hole and feel for the pressure as opposed to the suction). Once #1 cylinder is found, simply plug the rest of the wires onto the cap via the firing order. The cap has a boss that matches a notch on the hold clip, is the boss between one and two wire? I can't find the answer from the shop manual. I know that my '67 300 cap has a notch which is between one and two wire. I'm guessing the G should be the same? If it is the same than I really have a messed up cap wiring.
