Richard, I don't have an F or G, but I did change to 2.76 gears in a 300-L back in 1971. What I found was that because of the cam timing, it actually got worse mileage unless I was on a road with at least 70 MPH speed limit. It would get 2 MPG better at 70 than at 60, and at 60 the engine sounded like it was laboring. When I accelerated gently, you could hear and feel the engine smooth out and feel like it wanted to go when it got above 65, and really purr at 75 or above That was because it was just getting to the speed that the cam was more effective, and from there on up, it ran better, but around town, I usually just shifted down to 2nd gear. That was with just the one 4-barrel that was standard on the L. I imagine there would be even more difference with your G. My vote is for the 3.23, to let the engine run free; I don't think you will save enough fuel unless it is a really long trip on interstates with higher speed limits. But, I also just remembered that I have a 2:76 sure grip as well. I am looking at a long road trip this summer and am thinking about the 2:76 instead of the 3:23. Anyone with an F or G ever tried running these gears? I assume it will make the car an even bigger turd in town, but the highway might be nice. Any experience out there? I'll skip over the 4:88's for this swap.
