I think the procedure is shown in the service manuals and it is counter-intuitive as Wayne says. I don't understand the geometry of it all well enough but an old Nash factory man explained it to me decades ago and it works. Whatever you are trying to do is backwards to what needs to be done. Do next what you THINK will make it worse. Try it and report your results. Been working for me for years with the exception of when the hinges are too worn to get good adjustment.
