Rich, John and list, I've owned and have had registered my 300G in California since 1978, and it has been exempt the entire time from smog testing of any kind. When I moved to California in it was necessary to install NOX devices on '66 and newer cars unless they had multiple carbs. I remember buying a '67 Plymouth Belvedere that had one installed and I subsequently removed it because it was no longer required after I bought the car. I don't remember exactly what it did, but it connected to the distributor advance and the PCV device if I remember right. Once they started doing mandatory smog tests, cars was inspected to determine that none of the factory smog parts were missing or disabled. If they were, you had to replace them, no modifications were allowed, and still aren't for that matter on post '75 cars. The years that were exempt changed many times, and now there is talk of smogging cars earlier than '76 again. At one time it was a 25 year rolling exemption, then it went to 30 year, now it is '76 and newer. It can be quite challenging being an old car enthusiast in California, you never know what they will do next. I've even heard of Jay Leno personally making calls to representatives to head off old car smog legislation. It's a never ending issue, and I don't see it getting any better. That meant that all of the letter cars (with dual carbs of any sort) were exempt from most of the smog laws. However, if they are going to now go back to pre-1976 vehicles, they can probably impose whatever limits that they want.
