I placed white vinyl 3-M tape, cut to each row width, over the checkered flag area of my trunk pull on our 1955 C-300. Then I placed oversized squares of black in the appropriate places and trimmed them with a razor blade. Nice and shiny, sticking good and looks great. Probably stretchier and thinner than shelf material--and less noticeable. Looks a lot like I imagine the screened-on squares looked. Good definition at the edges and long, straight lines with the razor blade. Obviously not good for long trips in hot sun. Quick-n-EZ to redo. Looks way better than the previous attempt to paint the squares. If it were me, I'd pick up some UV resistant white self adhesive vinyl, place a square piece?over each letter on the grill, burnish it with a Q-tip or toothpick, and trim it with an Exacto Knife. I think it would be easier to trim it with a knife than to try painting it free-hand.
