Re: [Chrysler300] Sure Grip Rear - 300L

Darrin, Gil and all,

There is some contradiction in the literature I have. The AMA specifications has Sure-Grip as an option in one listing and standard in another listing of the rear axle specifications. The listings show the axle ratio for both standard and limited slip differentials, so that would imply that it was not standard but was an option. On the Car Production Broadcast sheet for the 300L, it shows Sure Grip as item #59, with a 2 filled in the blank for the car that has it. It is blank on those cars that do not have it. This would obviously indicate that it an option. Motor Trend's road test in 1965 listed it as being on their test car. I recall having the choice when I ordered my car, and I am quite sure that I do not have it on my L. At any rate, it definitely was available during the entire 1965 model year. If additional research turns up any other information, I will share it with the group.

  Darrin and All:
The 300L was definately available with the Sure Grip limited slip rear
axle----all year long. The info I have says it was standard epuipment, but I
think I will defer to 300L model year consultant Don Warnaar on that one. Sure
Grip was introduced in 1958 and was an option from that year on. 1957 390HP
300C performance package included a "limited slip" differential as well. I
don't think I would put too much trust in the accuracy of that book!

I have a question about the availability of the sure grip differential
for 1965 Chrysler (and prior years). Per the Chrysler 300 Series
Pedigree, Power and Performance since 1955 hardback book from Veloce
Publishing, it states on p. 119 in the chart of 300-L options that the
Sure Grip option code 596 was available March 1, 1965. Does this seem
correct? Does this in fact mean Chrysler did not offer this type rear
until after mid-production year? I thought Chrysler offered the sure
grip for years prior on 300's? Does anyone know when the first was
  offered? I even thought a 300-L that I previously owned with a 10/20/64
build date had a sure grip rear and my current 300-L, I believe has
sure-grip with a build date of 12/28/64? Could this just be a misprint
  in the book?

  Thanks,

  Darrin Bailey
