There is definitely truth in what you say about envy. Many people buy the car/house/clothes/gadget so that people will say, "Wow, look at the great collectible car that guy has." That was definitely not what I was hearing back in the late 70's and early 80's when I was driving around in my "funny looking" forward look cars that were just 20 year old ugly ducklings at the time. That's what makes it hard to jump at the chance to cash out during these times of ridiculous prices. I have my 57-62 Chryslers because I have actually always liked them, not because someone else thought they were special, and if I cash out now, I probably won't be able to ever have them again, because I just couldn't justify paying today's prices for hobby toys. The first non-letter 62 300 I ever purchased cost me $300 and my wife and I drove it for 12 years before finally having to part it out. We then replaced 'Bubbles' with 'Rosie', a 62 NYer Wagon, for a fraction of the cost of a new car in the early 1990's. We got them because they were interesting, fun to drive, and relatively easy to maintain, and different than all the other crap on the road that was designed using the same computer programs for drag coefficient. I'm thrilled that my G convertible has gone up and not down in value, but if it comes back to earth in terms of it's collectible value, I won't regret having not sold it, as I enjoy it every time I have a chance to drive it.
