Stephen: Hopefully, you will get lots of ideas from our more proficient mechanics, but the first that comes to my mind is fuel quality. What is left in your tank may be really crummy old stuff and even have condensed water in it. Heet is essentially alcohol and can absorb some moisture. Other recent suggestions include inspecting the distributor to be sure the advance plate can move smoothly without pulling apart electrical connections, replacing the condenser, monitoring input voltage at the coil during start & run cycles., inspect all connections and the ignition shunt resistor. '70 440's were still pretty decent engines with minimal pollution control, so should do much better when the problem is found. Vacuum advance hose can deteriorate and crack at the ends. I'd sure pull a plug or two and clean and gap if any problems are noted. Check air cleaner for mouse nests and proper operation of temperature control apparatus. The last fellow with a similar problem put his old coil back on and the problem went away. Good luck and keep us posted on what works and what does not work. Information and problem solving involving keeping this old iron running well is of interest to us all. When I drove it last fall to a storage garage, it ran quite poorly. I kind of assumed the carb needed rebuilt, as I knew the accelerator pump was not working, and the carb likely had never been rebuilt. The car has been mostly stored for quite a few years, although in recent years I would start it up briefly in the garage or run it around the block if the weather was decent. In any event, I rebuilt the Carter AVS 4 barrel carb, ( Clean Air System ), carb number AVS-4741S. The car still runs terrible. It will start up and idle, but in gear, the car will not accelerate, if you push the accelerator down, it will stall. I put a new fuel pump and fuel filter on the car 2 years ago. Put new points and condenser in it. I checked the point gap and dwell, and they appear to be OK. New distributor cap, rotor, plugs and ignition wires were put on it a number of years ago. > >Maybe I did not rebuild the carb properly? I would like to hear any suggestions any of you Club member have, as to what I need to do to get this car running well again? Thank you. Any ideas greatly appreciated!
