RE: [Chrysler300] Fuel Pump

Ron and fellow members....
I have to think that this problem may be a faulty fuel pump or fuel line
connection not holding the fuel pressure and thus allowing the gasoline in
the line to the fuel filters/carbs to drain down from lack of use. I now
have about 4,000 miles on my 300C and have not had any similar problems nor
do I remember my dad having any such problems back in 1957-1959, when he
owned another 300C. I have let my car set for a month or more over this past
winter without starting or turning it over and the most that was required
was to pump the pedal a couple times and the car fired right up. After
sitting for a few days or even a week the pedal pump is not required to fire
it up immediately. What is the source of the fuel pumps that are being used
by those having problems??

I did have a similar problem on my 1958 Dodge Sweptside 315 V8 but the only
difference I can see is that it did not have the glass fuel bowl installed
as it should have had from the factory. I later attributed the problem to a
somewhat loose rubber fuel line that later started leaking. I think if it
had the glass bowl fuel filter and a secure fuel line, it would have solved
the problem.... However, shortly after replacing that leaking line, I sold
that vehicle and cannot verify that as a fact.

My understanding from an old fuel pump rebuilder, is that the new fuels have
additives in them that will eat the old rubber diaphams in the fuel pumps in
short order and ultimately cause them to fail. He does all his rebuilds with
a mylar diaphragm to avoid that problem. I have one of his rebuilds on my
car at the present time.

So I have to ask this question: what were these cars like when they were new
? I have to think that if they were that difficult to start after sitting a
few days when they were new, then Chrysler would've had a major problem on
their hands. So what's changed that necessitates the installation of an
electric fuel pump in order to start the car ?
