If memory serves me correctly, early AFB's do not have a separate vacuum
choke pull off. It has a piston that is built into the choke thermostat
housing, and is ported directly to a passage in the carb body. I know the
ram carbs are like this, but don't have an E carb to look at right now. If
the car starts and runs normally when warm, it is probably something to do
with the choke though.
