My 2 cents.

I think you *would* need a 'sock' at the far end of the fuel line, just in the 
interest of not drawing rust, dirt or other stuff up the fuel line where is can 
get lodged and create frustrating problems that are tough to diagnose. I say 
buy up all the socks that you can afford. Replacement is easy, part is cheap 
and they'll last for a while.
