Rich, Based on your description of the symptoms, the most likely explanation is that someone unknowingly or otherwise swapped the battery connections, then polarized the generator when it was found not to be working. Some radios are impervious to polarity, but many are not. They're about the only thing on these cars that's polarity sensitive (other than the ammeter, of course). I would change the battery connections back to positive ground and re-polarize the generator* ... chances are that'll fix everything. Of course the radio could be bad in any case. * To polarize: before starting the engine after swapping the battery connections, momentarily jumper the Field terminal of the voltage regulator to the BAT terminal (or any other convenient "hot" power source).
