http://www.partsvoice.com/ is a site that you can use to search for parts.
If you enter part numbers it can sometimes find some vendors/suppliers who
claim to have that part.

Subject: Fuel Tank Sending Unit Sock


This subject has popped up in the past. One solution that was passed around
was to eliminate the 'sock' entirely. This is not a bad idea if the thing
plugs repeatedly with tank contamination (rust?). A restriction (not a
complete plugging) in the tank strainer will cause the engine mounted
mechanical fuel pump to work hard; a drop in fuel pressure at the fuel pump
inlet which with heat will encourage fuel vaporization in the line (vapor
lock).

Downside is that there MUST be a secondary downstream effective filtration
system in place to protect the carburetor, needle and seat. If car has a
booster pump back near the tank, there must be a filter before AND after the
pump as is always spelled out in instruction sheets packaged with
aftermarket electric fuel pump asemblies.

Little tip; the addition of an inline filter is always a good idea for an
older vehicle, (with or without a sock). And, I ran into a 3/8" inline metal
canister filter (looked for all the world like a quality piece!) that was
actually only a relatively course strainer; inside was wire (course weave)
mesh only and not the filter media that is necessary to properly filter out
crud. Part was second or third line, either AutoZone economy or Wix economy
line. Filters we use are Wix 33032, 33033 to suit or AC Delco metal
cannister filters and I know that they come with real filter media inside.

Parts need for 1970 Hurst in Germany


I need for the moment:
-trunk mat
-weatherstripping for the trunk
-the two inside door handles and armrests for the front doors(see photo)
-the container for the windshield washer fluid (see photo)
-the inside plastic rear window frames for both sides
-the plastic seat frame for the right seat (the part that also houses the
power seat controls)
-plastic frame around the front seat release knob (see photo)
-the middle drip rail molding on the roof for the right side

Yes, why worry about that doggone "sock filter" at the gas tank end when one
should have a good in-line filter at the fuel pump filter end.  Most of my
chryslers have one near the fuel pump. Makes more sense, easy to replace,
easy to check and economical.  My 1Cents worth.   Fern  300H & 300L

My 383 pickup had a hoses connected in line filter after the mechanical pump
from the factory. I have added an inlet side filter; very easy to do. This
has worked well for me as I can check/replace the inlet filter very quickly.

Good quality and new fuel hose with screw clamps is always a good idea.
Older compound rubber hose deteriorates rapidly when exposed to the low
emissions fuel that we buy today.

My 2 cents.

I think you *would* need a 'sock' at the far end of the fuel line, just in the
interest of not drawing rust, dirt or other stuff up the fuel line where is can
get lodged and create frustrating problems that are tough to diagnose. I say
buy up all the socks that you can afford.  Replacement is easy, part is cheap
and they'll last for a while.

I have found a source that will produce a high speed starter replacement if
there is enough interest. I am on the 3rd rebuilt original starter on my
300-F.

We would not need the 100 or so numbers that we had on the Coker Tire
Project but the more the interest the less the cost.

Please "reply all" so that the thread of comments can be read by everyone.

Is there a need? Is there an interest? In what price range would you
consider purchasing a replacement?

Maybe we can keep that original starter for Concours!

Hi Tony & all,

I used an aftermarket high torque starter on a 392 hemi with 10.5:1
compression it turned it over so easily and at an incredible rpm! Now I have
just fitted an original rebuilt unit into my C for the original look, no
comparison, much slower to turn over and more of a "struggle".

My friend down here in New Zealand will build up any starter at all in a 1,
1.5 , or 2 KV unit. He uses an atfermarket high torque motor and machines up
the end housing for the application. He sent me the 1.5 unit for the 392
saying it would be more than enough, and was it ever! The cost was about
$175US, worth every penny. The only drawback is these units look nothing
like original, I asked him if it was possible to somehow combine the two
starters, old look, new performance. He said it was not.

My two cents worth....

Hello all,
                   fresh from my mailbox , a nice color ad for a "customized"
300C.  It's a bronze/goldish color with white roof and interior.  The hemi is
chrome plated, it's got some desoto-esque looking side trim and oh yeah, the
roof line looks chopped several inches, the body has been slammed and it's
riding on low-profile 18 inch polished mags.

                   It looks pretty cool.  It reminded me of some Chrysler
book or magazine I had years ago.  There was feature of I think a 300C which was
dechromed, chopped and slammed.  The car was black and they made a big deal of
the record player under the dash so this was probably done in the 60's.  I
remember it was from California.  Does anyone remember this car... I wonder what
happened to it.

I thought that they changed the 413 crank and tranny in 1962 and that is why
high speed starters were readily available for that '62 & after set up.

What are the options for the up to '61 cars?

When you say "high speed" starter, do you mean a later Chrysler starter like the ones used on '62 and later, or one of the smaller aftermarket units used on '62 and later?

I agree. and it's not all that hard to drop the tank, clean it out, and seal
it with POR type sealer so there will be no more rust.
Except what gets pumped in at the $$$station.

Hi Tony:

Yes, I would be interested and why not. I am on my 2nd starter and I haven't
had my car as long as you have had yours.
Price, what can I say? Is $100 too llittle and $300 too much. It all depends
on how badly you want it.
As long as I do not have to cancel my trip to the Rivera in order to buy one,
count me in.
