Seems I have created a 60MPH governor on my C.  Every time I exceed 60 the fan belt squeals.  I'm pretty sure it is the generator belt since there is a black smudge on the under side of the hood above the generator(single belt that goes from fan to generator).  I've tightened it, cursed at it, changed it but no luck so far.  What obvious thing am I missing.  I'd really like to drive faster that 60.  Or , I guess, I could drop an slant 6 in the C and I wouldn't have to worry about going over 60 any more.  Thanks for any help on this.

Zak

Zak,
First I'd check the ammeter to ensure it isn't pegged out when the squeal
starts (i.e., something causing heavy charging load on the gen).  If the
charge rate is relatively low, I'd pull the gen and have a close look at it
internally for some cause of friction such as front bearing or rear
bushing/bearing.

Robert:

Below is a copy of an e-mail John sent me on exactly this topic:

No - not faster ratio; just "Firm-Feel" which makes the box "less power" and
eliminates that overly light steering.  There are various degrees of
"Firm-Feel".  My gold 300G has a regular "FirmFeel" rebuild and it is a
pleasure; when I had my '62 300 box redone, I had it 3 levels up of
Firm-Feel, and it was ..uncanny, best comparion is that it was like driving
a modern, front-wheel drive, non-power manual steering car.

There are two-three outfits that specialise in rebuilding the boxes..  the
best one to use is "Steer and Gear" in Ohio
Steer & Gear
1000 Barnett Rd.
Columbus, Ohio  43227,

The other outfit, "Firm Feel Inc. " on the west coast around Seattle or
Portland, will do the same thing, but for $100 more than Steer and Gear.
Steer and Gear is really quick about turnaround, too !

I hope they don't cast that much.  I got one for my Imperial with a 440
(which should be the same) and it seems the cost was less then $10.00.
Do some checking around.  Has anybody paid that kind of $$.????
If you want, I'll check with my dealer.
Good luck.

Hi all:

These rods are plentiful and cheap at wrecking yards.  Extract several, take
only the good ones and keep them in your tool box.  If there is a chamfer on
both ends, chances are that it is a good one.  If one end has no chamfer, toss
it, it is worn.  You never know when you or a friend will need one.  I
experienced the problem of a shortened rod 400 miles from home in my '66 300.  Had I
known then what I know now about the rods wearing short, I would be $600
richer.

Subject: 300's on TV

I was fortunate enough to have John Hertog bring his G convertible to
Coney Island back on April 1st, as I needed a picture car for a shoot.
It was a cold, rainy, long day, but the G looks great on camera.  One of
the 2 episodes is airing tomorrow night.  Here's the info:

Network:  THE TRAVEL CHANNEL

Show Title:  THEME PARK ROAD TRIP, Pt. 1

Hosted by:  JAMIE LYNN SIGLER (& John's G)

Air Date:  THURSDAY, MAY 29th

Time:    10:00pm (no matter where you are in the country)

Re-airs:  5/30/03 at 1am, 6/1/03 at 5pm

At some point, later this year, the network will air another show, which
was shot at the Warner Bros. back lot in Burbank, CA.  On that day I
used the beautiful '66 300 convertible owned by Dan Reitz.  That show is
called "TV ROAD TRIP", which is 1 of 4 of the same titled episodes and
is hosted by Christopher Knight (& Dan's 300)

Already aired this year was a different episode of "TV ROAD TRIP", in
which a segment was shot in Chicago on the TV show "Crime Story".  For
that we used an actual 300 from the series, owned by L. Andrew Jugle.

Thanks club members for the use of your 300's on my TV shows!  I prefer
to use the interesting Mopars, compared to the usual '57 Chevy.  Not
that there is anything wrong with a '57 Chevy, but come on, the 300's
are better to look at.right?

Mike

You did not say, but sounds like 58 gauges you are referring to. I have a
full set waiting to finish. The candy green is complete and needs silk
screening completed. I reversed engineered the gauge face markings and had
a silk screen made. Lets see, If I do a
1000 gauges I might break even. Oh well it's the challenge. I have all the
chrome housings re plated and inner trim ready as well.
I did a set for a guy in Sweden and he said that it could not be done in
there. It is tricky to get correct color.
If interested mail me and I will send photos. Or anybody else that may need
as new 58 restored gauges.

Is there any documentation that illustrates the emission package installed on California bound 300Gs ?  I've been thinking of installing it on my G.  When I'm idling in traffic, the emissions from the road tube are noticeable.  Summer is here and I want to do some crusin' in as clean a runnin' machine as possible.  Besides, my 10 year old daughter loves to ride but doesn't like the smell.

In all the shows I've been to over the years, I don't think I've seen one on a '61 300G.  Is there much to it?  Any drawbacks?

It basically consists of a nipple on one of the crossram tubes that has a hose connected to it that goes to a PCV  valve mounted in a housing that goes on the valve cover in place of the road draft tube.  I can take a picture of mine and send it to you if you'd like.  Alternatively, you could look on page 127 of the 1961 service manual supplement (blue and yellow Chrysler/Imperial book) and it'll give you a drawing.  It's a basic Positive Crankcase Ventilation system, and it works great.  No more stinky stop signs.

A decent picture that shows the PCV system can be found at :
http://www.chrysler300club.com/uniq/allaboutrams/jengine3.JPG

You can see the rubber hose that goes from nipple on balance tube to cap on
right side valve cover.
