Re: {Chrysler 300} 300G camshaft timing gear.

John and Andy, and others. Just for future reference and in response to John's comments reference the timing gears for ram manifold cars, the 1972 TRW Timing Chain and Gear catalog shows cam timing gear part number S-320 as used in 60-63 Ram Manifold cars, and part number S-290 used in non-ram cars, so the retard is apparently cast into the camshaft sprocket. Non ram cars use the TRW #S-290 from 1959-65 for 413 engines. The crank gear is listed as S-291 for both ram and non-ram cars. the 1982 Melling engine parts catalog shows the same numbers and applications, as does the 1982 Sealed Power engine parts catalog. It's interesting to note that the catalog shows that factory cam #1737622 fitted to the 300J originally is replaced by the regular high performance--non-ram) Sealed Power #223-290 (or S290 in the other catalogs), which has no built-in camshaft retardation. NAPA catalogs show the same application and numbers. The Sealed Power number for the 300J seems to contradict the other listings. Anyway, if you see these numbers laying around in NOS parts, they might be worth scooping up. Dennis

while I do not remember exactly , i believe the difference in cam retard , may have been done two ways( memory) in cam machining or gear machining .? in different years?
Sorry for my lack of clarity . It was long ago . It would help if we knew non retarded vs retarded sprocket machining to align with part numbers . Seems obvious but adds clarity . I doubt you can find a retarded sprocket new today ?
As J cam is different completely , that one is probably a normal chrysler gear .
I had some discussions ( occasionally a bit heated) way back on this , it sounds like they found in testing in 60 retarding cam gave some increase in torque ( I doubt much) at low down or highway tuned rpm and later versions factored that in and ground cams correctly . Sounded to me like a screw up in 60 on ram cam , IF going for torque not HP so special sprocket
This came up for me back then when using 3rd party ( comp ) cam ,which they say ( comp) is optimal grind as is ( like a J cam) set up “Normally “ .
Some believe rams enter this , matched to ram etc , pressure pulse comes later etc , but this also changes exhaust , and rams are working over an rpm range not one rpm . Retard might raise torque at lower rpm but cut hp higher up , we have to admit long rams are a dog over 4500 rpm cost 40 hp in the 5 k up area .vs in line quads on a good manifold Note J cam has less duration (!) yet for a high rpm short ram . (???) That engineering is not making sense . Something else in play …
We will never know , butI think they were going for big torque number to justify whole ram story lots of punch at 2800 etc ( 60 mph) . They knew all this why 400 hp F had short rams day one, if you want to go fast you need HP not torque .
I saw an AB dyno test on a built 450 “ 440 with rams then mopar single big 4 , 40 hp is the real loss, and torque not much better low down either Guy still kept rams liked them . Me too !
Bottom line , retard cam , you may get what you wish for..

> Hi Andy. According to the '63 Mopar parts catalog, the cam sprocket #1737622 you mentioned was also used on the 300J with the short rams. The standard 300F long ram cars were fitted with #2127202 camshaft sprockets, according to my '60 parts manual.( I assume the 300G would use the same numbers. I don't have a '61 parts manual) These numbers are specific to ram cars, including 300's and high performance Plymouths and Dodges of the time. Thanks for the information, and thanks to everyone else who commented . Dennis

In the engineering documents for the 300-F Gran Turismo Program that Jim Bartuska found in 1998, there is a notation in a parts list for “Camshaft Sprocket - Part No. 1737622, standard “B” engine” This is the only place I have ever seen a reference to it, and it would be the same for 300-G/GT.
