Unless I’m completely “misremembering “, one of the 727’s had 5 clutch packs. Maybe it was the street Hemi that I’m thinking of KL On Mar 13, 2025, at 9:02 PM, Carl Bilter <cbilter@xxxxxxxxx> wrote:
The 1963 FSM states that the 2-3 upshift at full throttle on the J should be from 89-101 mph. 1-2 shift was 53-59 mph. Again, this should be at 5400-5600 rpm.

yes— hard to believe — but i swear mine went 2-3 at indicated 100 mph with a chirp . Can that be right ?
I made a few serious mistakes , hotter cam and “ shift kit” .. It came with a “ shift kit !” in it already from mopar — with special gov weights etc . My effort raised it even more (!!) , wrong move it was perfect from factory .
The big “ way cool” result, blew all the belts off the pulleys if i stayed in it way up , but sure kept pulling . three radiators later ( belts tangle in fan , so rip up radiator ) I had learned my lesson . Thin wallet helped.
I remember gas tank internal rust a problem on J too .Despite “ cleaning it out” which is ineffective if rusting
I have become a big fan of ReNu baked epoxy process , fix that issue for good . That J and three packards one stude all stranding me in past 50 years over that . 400 $ cheap compared with hassle and a $ tow from no where , crud in pump , gas line , sock . Driving that J to Detroit from Boston I arrived with a 5 gallon red jug on front floor , hose out vent and under hood, electric pump hot-wired ( all this was on the road improv half way ) in Canada, with wrong MA plates( did not get caught ) one stressful day
ReNu a franchise, some are way better than others 1.74 exhaust valves are a huge improvement over F/G 1.6 , i think that is std 440 stuff later . I had an F with that , F heads noticeably faster than rest . Do not put in hard seats , not needed add gets too close to water , you can end up with door stop with the crack On Mar 13, 2025, at 6:10 PM, Keith Langendorfer <keith_a_lang@xxxxxxxxx> wrote:
I love the road test that Car and Driver did of the 300J. As I seem to recall, the journalist gave one of his kids and his/her friends a ride in the car while he had it for evaluation. At some point, the kids started to get goofy and unruly so the journalist nailed the J at an appropriate time, and between the secondaries opening up and that Max Wedge TF kicking down, the kids were plastered to the seat backs and were left speechless.

I had a good discussion with Ralph and Rockey at Kokomo on the subject. Rockey says J really the fastest and best - had best heads - 1.74" exhaust valves. He said ram K went back to 1.60" valves. Maybe running change? I don't know, I'm not a K guy. Ram K changed to 6 bolt heads, J was 4 bolt (only 400 built). Standard 413s (NYer, Imperial) had mid-year 63 running change to 6 bolt.
J really great compromise, agree with John. Lighter as well, break tires loose with 3-1 kickdown, can blow the doors off F/G in higher rpms, solid lifters and 5400+ rpm shift points, short rams and headers add 25HP! Really not a drag car, but one heckuva cruiser.

yes knew of him . Good guy . A row of garages one of each year .
I wanted to bring up the 62 ram were 405 , very close to 4 spd F engine , to the best of my knowledge .
I think Brock at nhra had in line 4’s but not sure . Long ram crashes at 4.5- 5 k , short ram unknown to me probably still a choking problem if over5- 5500 , but a superb compromise. 300 guys who never owned a J or K ram are in for a surprise .My J ( long sold) was the best handling and fastest 300 of all of them , George R too, experienced same thing . Don Cole too w K
I had same thoughts as you , John , in “what if “ land , my choice is a stroked 392 , out to 454 “ , Aluminum Hot Heads, headers , 518 trans ( 727 w OD) and a dana 60 around 4:30 . ——-in an F . Some old timers always said a “real 300 has a hemi “ and an F is gorgeous / no frame . I don't buy that first part of course as a J/k B block can spank a hemi , Maybe not a 454 “ one Almost finished, long time at it .. time flies jkg On Mar 13, 2025, at 1:56 PM, John Nowosacki <jsnowosacki@xxxxxxxxx> wrote:
I may have written this before, but I'm old now, so please bear with me. A long time ago, probably in the early 90's if not late 80's, there used to be a cool car show and swap meet in MA run by the North Shore Old Car Club at the Topsfield fairgrounds. There was even an auction that took place on Saturday, with the judged show on Sunday and swap meet both days. Anyway, a fellow by the name of Richard Rigoli used to bring multiple letter cars to that show, including a white 62 300H that had blue 'short' crossrams and was said to be a 405 HP car. I didn't know as much about letter cars back then, so I didn't dive in to look at things like what kind of exhaust, manual vs automatic chokes, how power brakes were set up, etc. I was just wowed by the concept, whether it was 'real' or a 'tribute' or a 'What if?' didn't matter to me, and it wasn't for sale, just in the show, so it's not like it mattered, but it was cool. Rigoli had many letter cars, maybe one from every year except if there was a convertible available, then he had one of each from that year. He built a 62 monster drag car that he would trailer to shows some of the time as well. Interesting fellow. He used to give me grief about the rear of my G coupe being up too high in the air, and also the raised white letter tires I had on it instead of wide whites, so it seemed like he was a bit of a stickler for originality. I also had a 61 Newport at one time. If I had more free time and disposable income, I used to think it might be fun to build a lightweight, short wheelbase, 300G with a J or K engine setup so I could have an even faster G than Chrysler ever built, and be better looking than an H, J, or K (one man's opinion) because it would still have fins! I would expect Mr. Grady or Mr. Tom White would have known Mr. Rigoli and his fleet? Someone posted a question on Facebook about ram induction on the 300H, which I believe were only dealer-installed. Someone else replied that they had a set of ram intakes from one of them for sale. I asked for a casting number and they provided the one for the left side of 2129987.
When I search for this number online, it comes up as J/K ram intake.
The club tech page about rams doesn't list full casting numbers.
Is there a definitive list of casting numbers?
In an article on my own web site contributed by Wayne Graefen, he states that the '60-61 intakes are different from later ones but also includes the casting number mentioned previously.
I know that the '60-61 exhaust headers are different from the J/K ones. But what would a 300H have used?
Since it is commonly reported that the ram parts for a 300H were included in the trunk, I doubt they put a whole new exhaust system in there. That would be required to work with the cast headers and provide the full 405 horsepower rating. There are other things that make this "parts in the trunk" concept unlikely. What about the other mods to the engine? Camshaft? Valvetrain? Compression ratio? Any mods to the transmission?
There was a 300H sold at auction that claimed to have the dealer-installed ram system, but only one picture and no VIN is shown.
Thanks for any feedback.
