agree — many differences — mostly trying to justify the huge price delta.. for what ? —— what item really truly matters to performance of the car , as opposed to difference in list of “stuff you get on an H” not on a Sport ? compare both lists to a G ? Best thing about 62 cars is lighter weight and 727 , if real performance is the goal . As mentioned before Ray Brock ( Hot Rod Magazine) got a 62 727 into mid / high 12’s lost the final race NHRA summer nationals that year against 421 Pontiac that actually turned a slower time ( he was asleep on line ! in last race! auugh!) He had a 294 degree cam in it , guy was crazy , imho , I thought that would slow him , but he picked up a little bit . Had to be well over 6000 rpm to do that ! GM had to copy the 727 , came out later with Turbo 400 The good old days , real stock cars for real, not identical engine plastic toyotas in Nascar and almost that way at Nhra On Mar 13, 2025, at 12:46 PM, Nick Taylor <nicksgaragesd@xxxxxxxxx> wrote:
Was that the estate sale in 2020? If so, I wish I'd bought that car.
The rams won't fit with auto pilot. Otherwise I'd be tempted to install a set in my '60 NY wagon.
There are many differences between a 300 Sport and an H, but you could order a Sport with all the H stuff except the interior. I've always thought that the 4-seat configuration between 1960-62 was a sales limiter. And with the appearance of the Sport in 1962, sales of the letter car dropped significantly. But was that due to lack of interest or the fact that you could order up a 6-passenger car with the same performance? Are there any production numbers that show how many sports came with the 340 and 380 horsepower option? Even in 1963-64, you could option the 340 horsepower 413 in the Sports. It seemed to be a popular option.
Nick hi Nick , I have an original paint red Sport Convert red interior white top with 300J engine complete — best way to say it,J engine exhaust and all , I think built as a tribute , rust free car I got it from a California estate sale . It even has AC w the rams . It had autopilot but those cables are not connected now. Love 727 in that body one less hassle Rather nice car ; thinking of selling if anyone has a big interest . Doing this would set you back 60 + and even worse , two years , all in today . I think worth 50 ? “ Real” Difference between Sport and H is mostly the trunk letter as you know . . But it does all fit ok .. fyi
Someone posted a question on Facebook about ram induction on the 300H, which I believe were only dealer-installed. Someone else replied that they had a set of ram intakes from one of them for sale. I asked for a casting number and they provided the one for the left side of 2129987.
When I search for this number online, it comes up as J/K ram intake.
The club tech page about rams doesn't list full casting numbers.
Is there a definitive list of casting numbers?
In an article on my own web site contributed by Wayne Graefen, he states that the '60-61 intakes are different from later ones but also includes the casting number mentioned previously.
I know that the '60-61 exhaust headers are different from the J/K ones. But what would a 300H have used?
Since it is commonly reported that the ram parts for a 300H were included in the trunk, I doubt they put a whole new exhaust system in there. That would be required to work with the cast headers and provide the full 405 horsepower rating. There are other things that make this "parts in the trunk" concept unlikely. What about the other mods to the engine? Camshaft? Valvetrain? Compression ratio? Any mods to the transmission?
There was a 300H sold at auction that claimed to have the dealer-installed ram system, but only one picture and no VIN is shown.
Thanks for any feedback.
Nick
