{Chrysler 300} 1962 300 - Transmission Adjustments

Our ’62 Sport has less than 5,000 miles on its rebuilt 383 & torqueflight.
The transmission has never shifted right.

I recall how these transmissions are supposed to shift from 2 prior rebuilds for our ’62 Sport & ’62 NY Wagon.
I recall they allow you to feel the shifts.
I recall what a ball it is when doing 55mph & you floor it…how it downshifts to 2nd & launches you forward to pass others.

It is shifts way too quick, most all the time…..like a Buick Dynaflow with no feeling between the gears.
Sometimes it doesn’t want to shift from 2nd to 3rd; a more rare issue.

And so I think through the adjustment process and needs your collective brains, please….

  • I have done very accurate step by step adjustments from the Carburetor Linkage to the Accelerator Pedal to the Transmission, per the shop manual.
    • And done this more than once; to check myself.
  • I have done a very accurate step by step adjustments of the Shifter Cable, per the shop manual.
    • This is a new Shifter Cable, so the adjustment was necessary upon installation of the drivetrain.
    • But I have not repeated this adjustment since installation.
  • I have NOT done the Band Adjustments listed in the shop manual….YET….
    • I don’t have a lift; so its more of a pain to jack up the car, set jack stands, crawl under, drain the pan, and such…but so be it.
    • I don’t have the super-secret factory tools notated on page 44 (Tools 3380 & 3705 - What are they in real life?)
    • I don’t have a torque wrench that gives Inch Pounds, so will have to bo buy one (only have one that measures foot pounds)

Anyone feel that I should proceed with the Band Adjustments?
Or other ideas?

Thank you all!
