Re: {Chrysler 300} oily spark plugs

You probably need new (pliable) seals that are fitted to the top flange of the tubes before installing them.
Most of these seals, if original are more than likely hard as a rock after all these years.

Besides, it was considered "cool" or "neat" not to have the covers and compression rings not installed
so all the "kids" could see the "cool" engine you had under the hood!!

They are meant to seal the area around the tube and under it where it meets the valve cover proper when compressed
by the flat washers that fit over the top of the seal and are compressed by the wire covers when they are tightened down.

What kind of shape are the bottoms of your tubes in?

Cracks in them maybe?

I have a 300C. The engine runs well, starts right up. I noticed a little soot in the tailpipes, so I pulled the spark plugs. There is oil on the threads, the bottom rim of the plug is shiny sooty black and the ceramic insulator is dark brown. The electrode tips are a milk chocolate brown (except for no.1). There was oil inside and outside the spark plug tube and there was a lot of oil in the well of the head that the spark plug tube slides into. The first photo attached is with a new plug in the background to get a color reference.

The spark plug crush washer has been removed (at the recommendation of the Chrysler manual) and the plugs torqued to 32 ft.lbs.  Is there a way to seal the tube so that oil doesn’t get down into the bottom of the tube and the plug?

Also, now that the cylinder chamber may have a lot of carbon, is there a recommendation for one of those carbon cleaner fuel additives?

Thanks, California Henry
