RE: {Chrysler 300} RE: cooling - 300K

No Kidding….

The odd thing is that I purchased a Gates at the same time. When I went to test it I noted that on the side it was stamped motorad as well…

I stuck it in as it is all I had and I needed to get the car back together. I am going to see if I can hunt down a couple of NOS units…

maybe the fail open design is at the root of it .

Just use a stock rock  auto mopar thermostat .

in another world I dabble in , Eniac computer ( about 1944) had 33000 vacuum tubes , first electronic  programmable computer . Cynics said one will burn out before doing   one problem .

I met designer , Pres Eckert . He was smarter than the Harvard math guys, cynics  doing statistics .

It was buikt with off the shelf RCA radio tubes , ( worked) but Navy insisted on ultra high quality tubes ( expert on everything as govt is) That took years , cost a fortune each one . Put them in  , did not work ( got paid anyhow )

Went back to radio /tv tubes made by the 10 millions at RCA worked  fine . Had to — in market , or RCA was out of business .

Auto parts are  the same , Walmart battery really  is better than  optima by a lot for 1/3 the price .  ( check AH at 20 hour rate) )

low production way cool stuff with a lot of marketing hype in gorgeous boxes, wild claims  is seldom as good as

plain jane slant six stuff .  mho

So,

I pull the GATES stat that I had purchased to carry in the car and test it. Works, Then I note stamped on the side of it MOTORAD the same crap manufacturer that made the fail open one that just stuck open.

I call around to all the store in the area, everyone either has no name ones or Motorad.

To get Stant or one from one of the HP suppliers and the car will be down for days!

So, I guess I will have to stick the crap Motorad in and cross my fingers…

You order Gates and you get some crap in the Gates Box.

Well,

It turns out that it was not the temperature sending unit on my 300K that was causing the gauge to read low. Nor was it the voltage limiter or the gauge. I had some 7 Ohm resisters around, so I made some up to get to 21 Ohms which is what the water temperature gauge is supposed to be in the middle or 180F position.  When I hooked it up the gauge went to about 12 O’clock or the middle of the dial. I figured the sender and the gauge is good.

The 18-month-old thermostat failed. It was one of those units that fails open. That is the only good thing.

So, for the second time in 10 days, I had to pull the A/C compress up and out of the way to get to the thermostat housing area. What a PITA Chrysler did in having the thermostat and the sender buried under the compressor. At lease all the bolts are new and have anti seize on them, so everything comes apart nice.

I guess I am going to have to make up a get the compressor off kit with the tolls in a small box with a sender and thermostat to carry in the car in the event one fails again on the road.  Including one of those large bolts to get the pulley and clutch off. I have found it is better to pull the clutch and pulley and take the compressor off the brackets rather than try to pull the compressor with the brackets.

I may change the three small bolts that hold the coil to the compressor to hex head so one is less likely to drop them. A hex socket would also go into my little kit for the road.

I hate having to redo work due to crap parts.

James.
