Re: {Chrysler 300} oil filter housing problem.....

I also have a '56 Windsor with the same bell housing filter.  Years ago the washer wore out and I could have sworn it was a leather washer.  So I went to Hobby Lobby and brought a piece of leather (see photo) and made my own.

It has been at least 5 years since I did this and I change my oil every year and it has never leaked once.  Also, an old timer told me to put grease (not oil) on the o ring to make it stick better to the housing when screwing it on and yes, it is a pain in the butt trying to hold that housing with the spring inside and at 45 degrees trying to screw that darn thing in w/o moving the housing and o ring.  It is also important to torque to 25 ft lbs and check it again after about 500 miles.

Thanks Dave..... Im trying to go through some older threads on the Forward Look site, and saw some folks mention that. Weird, as I had never taken that bolt out of the housing, so it should still be there, but its probably im pretty sad shape.. Ill pull it and check it out and report my "findings".

I think there was/is a flat copper gasket under the bolt head if memory serves me correctly.

All,

I figure you are the best to ask....

Just changed oil on my '56 Desoto (330 Hemi), and for some reason, I can not.get the top bolt on the housing, the one you tighten down to stop leaking. In the box, for the new filter, I saw where it came.with the large round gasket for the base of the housing, but nothing for the the 5/8 bolt that tightens down everything. Im not even sure how you would get a gasket, o-ring, seal etc.... around it as the bolt is held in place by a spring, and doesnt seem to come out....at least not easily.

What am I doing wrong????!!!

Thanks.
