Re: {Chrysler 300} FW: '64 center console removal

hi avoid white grease like the plague . Stuff turns to solid yellow glue . Was big in 50’s it’s junk. Lubriplate turns solid

I use a tube of chassis grease or wheel bearing grease , large toothpick ; synthetic  or lithium  grease even better .
never turns hard .

75 w synthetic GL4 in squeeze bottle is terrific too . stays  there but can run in , great in window lifts seats gearboxes ,
Not the GL5 (more common ) it has EP additives supposedly hurt brass parts
I have modified a lab squeeze bottle or any plastic squeeze bottle with 6” of plastic wiper water hose , weatherstrip cement a tite  fit hole through  cap , use brake kleen red straw about 4 “ long sealed into other end . Humans make tools(!) this is one w GL4 one of best  things I even made , all kinds of linkages gearboxes screws locks etc

Thanks to everyone who emailed and texted to me on this. One would think that since I did several of these 30 plus years ago, I would have remembered.  Guess not.

I got it out and then took the shifter off the console one I soaked the screw to get them to come free. On the reverse, I hooked it up to the cables and then fished it up into the console.

The “gates” on mine look fine. I cleaned all the old grease and dust combo out and put some new white grease in it.

My driver’s seat does not want to go up/down easy, I will have to get into that at some point.  I now have the old carpet out and the console and seats back in so I can drive it.  All the bolts-screws are clean and have anti seize on them so once back in my cramped work space in San Francisco, I can get things apart easy on the sidewalk.

I will have to take the carpet and mark it for the thick heal pad and see have someone sew it down for me. Then I can start on the new carpet.  The old jute looks fairly good and can be reused.

Thanks again for the help today. I just brain farted and forgot you can just take out those two little chrome strips and then have access to the shifter screws to take out the console and leave the shifter behind.

Best, James

Subject: {Chrysler 300} '64 center console removal

Hi All,

Working in the 90F sun on the drive way pulling the seats and console.  I have all the screws out and it will not move much.  Please tell me there is enough room to lift it up and get the carpet out WITHOUT having to remove the shifter cables from under the car…

I got it to move a little, but something is holding it back and I do not want to hurt anything…

James
