Weak solenoid, dirty or loose connections, broken wire between relay and
solenoid, stuck solenoid piston would be my guess
I had my F act up like that and it was due to leaking oil dripping on the
starter.
Have you had the starter off for testing?

  Hello guys,

  I am so close... The motor has sat for 40 years in a sealed, dry garage.
I have flushed everything, soaked and primed everything.  

  I am able to smoothly turn it over by hand from the front of the engine.
But when I try to start it with the starter it spins the starter but wont
engage the flywheel???

  It is a 1958 300d.... Any ideas or solutions?
