RE: [Chrysler300] We're just fuming!



Actually, 1961 was the first year for PCV valves in California.  You will
find coverage of it in the '61 Chrysler supplement, and it shows one
installed on a ram inducted engine!  I have converted my G to a PCV valve, I
found an original, and you can still get them on eBay although the later
ones work fine too.  Over the years I've had some complaints about exhaust
smell while idling stopped, so the PCV has eliminated the gasses from being
expelled.  
 
Having said that, I don't think the downdraft tube is the issue with Keith's
car.  Close inspection of the entire exhaust system, with engine running,
should reveal any small leaks.  In addition, bad trunk seals or a hole
someplace can definitely allow fumes to be pulled in.  I had a similar
problem last September, but traced it to a leaking muffler.  Also, when new
pipes or mufflers are fitted, make sure and use the exhaust system sealant
sold at auto part stores.  I did not use it at first, and upon inspection
with the engine running on a lift, I found significant leakage at the pipe
to muffler joints, then took it apart, applied the sealant, reassembled, and
voila!  No leaks.

Weelllll, since callyfornia mandated PCV's sometime in the 50's one 
could install one and claim it was a California car originally :-)

I do have a few pictures of a 57 392hemi with the PCV setup on it
