RE: [Chrysler300] Voltage Regulator

One of the primary functions of the current/voltage regulator in the generator equipped systems is to disconnect the generator's output from the battery when the generator is not turning fast enough to generate a voltage that will support the system's electrical demand.  If not disconnected it becomes a load on the system and will be damaged if left in that state.  The disconnect is accomplished by a relay called the "cutout relay" , thus most of the regulators have 3 sets of contacts within (cutout relay, voltage limiter, current limiter).  The alternator does not require the cutout relay because it is protected from battery feedback by the diode set.  Chrysler's early regulators for the alternators consist only of a single relay with the purpose of limiting voltage output from the alternator and that relay resembles the voltage limiter relay in the generator system's regulator.  There is NO interchangeability of these regulators.

Iâ??ve got to believe that the external Voltage regulators for alternator-equipped cars are entirely different in function and design than the current and voltage regulators (as they are called in my â??55 service manual) for generator-equipped cars. However, I have seen references here to the problematic point-type voltage regulators in early alternator-equipped cars, so perhaps some of the old technology carried over to the new.
