This is correct. On the cast iron TF and PF it is on the top of the extension housing. It is pressed in, and can't be removed with the part in place. A quick check would be to see if the "hat" on top moves freely. If it is stuck or tight, it may be plugged. I have seen this on a few transmissions I have done.

As far as I know, ALL automatic transmissions have vents. I saw a GM tranny
with a blocked vent blow the dipstick out and put several quarts of fluid
into the engine compartment.
