Ron - I have a personal hate for base coat/clear. When ever I get into
a discussion, with a body man/shop about what paint to use - I tell him
I do not accept the crap base coat/clear coat systems and walk out !.
Since It is near impossible to get single stage paint jobs, here in the
Bay Area of Calif., I have ended up doing my own painting with acrylic
enamel (PPG-have to buy out of area/state). The two stage paint is
difficult to touch up nicks etc. whereas I, a novice, can touch up
single stage enamel defects, perfectly, without having to repaint a
whole section of a 2-stage paint. My two cents! Been panting my cars
for 40+ years.
I'm not familiar with the 300 club judging but I know the Plymouth
Owners Club judging rules deduct for base/clear coat paint thus
eliminating any points for the body paint no mater how good it is.
Thus a rough, but original, paint job will gain points over a perfect
clear coat paint job.
