Hi Bill,
From what I have read, and the little I have done, the following
were some recommended steps.
1. Evaluate, trim with sharp creases or edges will be very hard to
bring back.
2. Some folks have recommended tapping on a small anvil, others have
recommended using smooth non-metallic instruments to actually press
the dents out before trying any tapping. When one taps sheet metal
with a hammer against a hard surface, the metal is flattened
(obviously) but is also increased in area causing a bubble.
3. If the dent is brought almost out to the surface, or if the dent
is brought beyond the surface, then metal must be removed to achieve
a flat surface. That means filing or sanding. The metal is draw
filed with progressively finer files, then sanded until absolutely
smooth. THEN, the polishing can be done to bring back the proper
luster. Care must be used to avoid burning the metal during
polishing/buffing to avoid that nasty blue look.
I have done a couple of small pieces of trim and they turned out
ok. I think with a lot more practice the time involved and the
product would be a lot better. It took me hours of work for these
small pieces.
The point is that the dent removal is just the first part in a very
laborious process, so don't judge your results yet, the job isn't done. :-)
