Did the smoke smell electrical? Or like burnt oil? If
electrical it could be just your AC clutch going and some times just the
bearing in the clutch. Where you still getting cold air? If so I would think
the compressor could be ok because if it was to the point of smoking there is
no way you would be getting cold air.

I had one of the cars out for a 100 plus mile drive last night and on the way home started smelling something burning. Turns out it's the A/C compressor.....it was smoking pretty good by the time I got home. I don't want to assume its just a bearing although I suspect that all it is. I'd like to rebuild the whole unit, has anyone done their own or is it better to just leave it with a professional.

 

Any advice? What would one of these typically cost to have rebuilt?Ryan Hill (Vancouver, B.C.)
