[Chrysler300] Cleaning Old Exterior Car Alum.

Hi All,

Missed the bottom line on the recent discussion about how one cleans old
Alum. that is on the INTERIOR of old cars.

This question is about old car EXTERIOR Alum.

Have had to clean portions of Alum. wheels (and some trim) with "ooo" and
"oooo" steel wool to get off the old paint (or yellowed clear coat - unsure
which) and accumulated crud (like the beginnings of pits). This took off
the anodization. So had to clean and polish. Now looks more like chrome
now than Alum. Can one now paint or somehow treat the Alum. to keep it from
getting all crappy again since there is no longer an anodized finish?

Is taking off the anodization a big mistake or what?

But once it has been done, what then?

Was thinking of POR clear since it is SUPPOSED to NEVER YELLOW. Is this
true? But hear that POR clear is good to less than 400 degrees (will need
much higher for wheels - right?).

Does anybody know a way to REALLY CLEAN exterior Alum. that has paint or
marginal anodization, so as not to hurt the factory anodized finish.

Or if one must strip off the anodization, what is the best way to protect
what's left.

Assume one could get things like wheels stripped and reanodized. But am not
sure about repainting where necessary or the cost of doing something like 4
wheels and various trim pieces.

Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

See Ya! in Wisconsin !

Allan and Gloria
