  The use of water processed by distillation is specifically not recommended and this recommendation I have seen from a number of crediable sources. Some say to use simply (and I would assume sediment filtered at the least) what comes out of the tap.  What confuses is that 'distilled water' is used in a lot of literature. I think that the makeup of local tap water in a lot of areas, even when sediment filtered,  can be so poor that it definately should not be used in an automotive cooling system. Reference here would be the plumbing industry that is moving away from copper pipe in favor of plastic pipe for gas and water services (new technology stuff, not the stuff that generated all the lawsuits years ago).

  I have seen enough published from sources very close to cooling system technology that I use only water processed through an on site reverse osmosis system. Before the on site unit, we used water from a supermarket RO dispenser. This has been what I have used for some 30 years+ now with good results.

   Coolant does need to be changed. Extended life coolants are generally not recommended for systems with soldered copper parts BTW.

  I too have read not to use distilled water. As I remember, the 
  reason given was that since it has no minerals in it, it wants to 
  leach minerals from it's surroundings. In the case of one's 
  radiator, that would be lead solder and other softer metals. That 
  may be where solder bloom comes from. The article recommended tap 
  water or bottled drinking water I believe. Don't know if it is true 
  or not, but I never used distilled water and never had a problem, but 
  then we always had good tasting drinking water. Maybe some of that 
  West Texas water might not be the best. :-P
