There were indeed more 300C engines (#3NE57_____) than there were cars. The VIN number and the engine number (also the frame number without the "E") only matched by accident on a couple of cars. It was never intended that the VIN and engine number should match on the 300Cs.
The second C built, #1002 received engine #1000 so you see with less than a handful of cars sitting there no attempt was made to synchronize VIN and engine. The last C built, #3251, had engine #3338, a variation that would suggest some 87 extra motors were built.
