I've had this problem twice in the past, and it was two different issues.  The first time it was the ball and trunion U-joint that had failed, and the second time it was the large nut that holds the emergency brake drum on the tail shaft of the transmission.
You have to remove the 4 nuts and drop the ball and trunion end of the drive shaft to see the nut that holds the emergency drum onto the tail shaft.

Oh, I just remembered a third instance (I've had a lot of these cars in the last 30 years).  Also check the 4 bolts that hold the transmission to the bell housing.  I had a car that came with a 'rebuilt' cast iron torqueflite, but the bolts must not have been tightened to the correct specification when it was reinstalled, so they backed out a bit and the transmission was literally wobbling on the bell housing.  It tore up the drive sleeve and the converter!

I had this problem in my 1957 300-C conv. and it was not a problem as you  
outlined. It was the ball and trunion joint at the transmission end of the  dr
iveshaft.

ground and start the motor and try to recreate the  problem  without 
hazarding a drive in it.  You might see a  broken transmission mount or
