[Chrysler300] Watch out for new oil

Group

The June 2006 HOT ROD magazine has an interesting article on engine oil and flat tappet failures. It seems that many anti-wear ingredients are now missing from your basic oils for the sake of environmentalism. There is a deceiving "starburst" seal to watch out for that says "American Petroleum Institute * Certified * For gasoline Engines"

Quoting the article ..."You'll see this starburst symbol on the latest API ILSAC GF-4 street legal, energy saving oils. It means they meet all the latest industry oil specs, fully satisfying emissions requirements, and fulfill all the new car manufacturer warranty requirements. But it also indicates seriously reduced ZDDP content, which can cause problems with high-performance flat tappets".

Basically this environmental oil works well enough to lubricate roller lifters on new vehicles, but it is not to be used with flat tappet lifters. Buyer Beware. The old car owner gets it in the end again! Not to worry, however; there are still plenty of available oils for flat tappet usage by the informed consumer.

Just wanted to bring this to your collective attention. Please read the entire article for your own benefit.
