Pete,
I collect antique phones. My wife bought me one for an anniversary gift
some years back. It is a Western Electric candlestick model with a rotary
(they also made them without a rotary). It is plugged in and works as well
as any other phone in the house. My kids are 10, 8 and 4
respectively....your story reminds me of the many times their friends have
tried to use the phone and not have ANY clue how to dial the thing...they
try to push the numbers but never quite think of turning the rotary dial.
It is a different world we live in today.

The question posed to the kid was "What do you find so interesting about
this car?" Without a pause the boy said "The pushbuttons to make it go!".
While growing up any Chrysler product that could have had a pushbutton
transmission in my mind was the coolest.
On the way to the Maine meet, one of my Coker tires decided to disassemble
and delaminate, and we pulled into a Chrysler dealership just over the Maine
border. When the kid came out to take the car in to the bay, he just sat
in the driver's seat and looked lost. I pointed out the shift buttons and
told him to just push the "D" and he reached out and merely touched it and,
when nothing happpened, looked at me like "Well, what now?" Seems he
thought it worked like any modern electronic button where you just touch it.
Well, I finally convinced him to actually push the button and when it
worked, he was just blown away. Funny how things change.
